Egiptólogo francés. Tuvo un papel principal en el desciframiento de jeroglíficos egipcios. Champollion fue un lingüista prodigio, a los 19 años ya dominaba el hebreo, el árabe, el siríaco y el copto, como también el griego y el latín. Después de estudiar la piedra de
Rosetta y otros textos, Champollion demostró en forma concluyente en su obra
Précis du système hiéroglyphique des anciens Egyptiens [Resumen del sistema jeroglífico de los antiguos egipcios] (1824) que podía asignarse un valor fonético a algunos jeroglíficos. Fue nombrado conservador de la colección egipcia del Louvre (1826) y condujo una expedición arqueológica a Egipto (1828–30). See also
